Become an IOA member.

STUDENTs

Students are interested in aging research and are notified of opportunities relevant to students, such as networking events, internships, or volunteer positions.

Available for students and recent graduates.

Benefits

Expectations

  • Follow and engage with the IOA on LinkedIn (once launched)

AFFILIATES

Affiliates are individuals who have an interest in aging research and maintain a connection with the Institute on Aging. Affiliates may participate in events and collaborative activities but are not formally engaged in driving the mission of the institute.​

Available for faculty and fellows. Trainees and staff at all levels​ are welcome.

MEMBERS

Members are investigators who actively contribute and drive the Institute’s research mission. Members participate in collaborative activities, have full access to Institute resources, and are invited to executive committee meetings.​

Available to faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and management- or director-level staff.

Benefits

  • Study recruitment support​ through IOA channels, including:
    • Advertisement and/or dedicated article through Mainstreet Daily News’ Aging Matters

  • Streamlined access to shared datasets and repositories (e.g., OAIC cohorts, EHR-linked data) ​

Expectations

  • Provide updates on publications, grants or public activities​
  • Participate in Aging Seminar series and IOA events​
  • Serve as a speaker at IOA community seminars and various events​
  • Serve as a mentor where appropriate 
  • Serve on committees and strategic initiatives​
  • Provide updated Curriculum Vitae (CV) on an annual basis

CORE MEMBERS

Core Members are highly engaged investigators who serve as central drivers of the Institute on Aging (IOA) mission. They play a defining role in advancing interdisciplinary research, shaping strategic priorities, and accelerating the translation of discoveries to improve the health and independence of older adults. As voting members of the Executive Committee, Core Members contribute directly to the governance, direction, and growth of the Institute. 

Core Membership provides a platform for scientific leadership and influence. Members have priority input into IOA initiatives, including pilot funding priorities, emerging research themes, and center-wide programs. They are positioned at the forefront of coordinated funding efforts, with early visibility into large-scale opportunities and the ability to help lead multi-investigator and multi-center proposals. 

Core Membership also supports academic advancement and national visibility. Core Members are recognized as key contributors to IOA productivity and impact, with opportunities for featured presentations, leadership roles in symposia, and visibility across Institute communications. These activities contribute to a strong track record for promotion, leadership appointments, and sustained funding. 

Core Membership is reserved for investigators with a sustained record of engagement and contribution to IOA programs, interdisciplinary initiatives, and center-supported activities. It reflects both a commitment to advancing the science of aging and a leadership role within a high-performing, collaborative research enterprise. 

Become a Core Member by self-selection or invitation. All core member applications are reviewed by IOA leadership for merit.​

Footnote about IDC contributions

Institute IDC contribution: Indirect costs (IDC; facilities & administrative costs) are applied to all externally funded awards (e.g., NIH, NSF; UF’s federally negotiated rate is 53.5%) and are distributed across the University, College, Department, Institute, and Principal Investigator (PI; ~10%). A portion of these funds (up to 7.5% per project) may be directed by the PI to one or more UF institutes. This allocation does not reduce PI-controlled IDC funds, but instead determines how the institute-designated share is distributed. If no institute is selected, this portion defaults to the College. PIs may request allocation (in full or part) through their departmental administrator.​

Core Members demonstrate sustained commitment by directing 50% of their eligible institute IDC to the IOA [Center ID: 10.1770]. These contributions directly support shared research infrastructure and investigator resources, including seminar programming, participant recruitment, research space and transportation, biospecimen storage, early-career training, collaborative initiatives, and publication support—enhancing the Institute’s capacity to deliver high-impact, translational aging research.​
