Congratulations to Dr. Christiaan Leeuwenburgh for receiving the University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship Award, which is created to recognize the faculty who have established a distinguished record of research and scholarship that is expected to lead to continuing distinction in their field.

Please join us for the Clinical and Translational Research Building groundbreaking ceremony, which will take place at 1PM, Thursday, May 26, 2011 at the Northeast corner of Mowry Road and Gale Lemerand Drive!  The building will house UF’s Institute on Aging, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute and an array of other research departments and clinical programs.

The Search Committee Meeting for the Assistant/Associate Professor opened in the Biology of Aging division will take place on November 12th, 2010 at 11am, in the Aging and Rehabilitation Research Center meeting room.

Yohannes Endeshaw, M.D., joined the Clinical Researh Division as an Assistant Professor position.  In addition to conducting research, Dr. Endeshaw will provide geriatric care in our outpatient venues and nursing home, and will also work in the Sleep Clinic.

Dr. Ron Shorr has been appointed the Director of the Advanced Postgraduate Program in Clinical Investigation (APPCI).   Dr. Todd Manini has received the UF Excellence Award for Assistant Professors.   In October 2010, Arnold Seo, a Biology of Aging Division trainee, will start his post doctoral training in Dr. Lippincott-Schwartz’ laboratory at the NIH, where he will study mitochondrial dynamics.   Debapryia Dutta, a Biology of Aging Division trainee, has been awarded an American Heart Posdoctoral Fellowship.  Congratulations to all!

Congratulations to the geriatric fellows (Hassan Zaman, MD, Hsiao-Yen Kuo, MD, Simin Houshmand, MD and Bichvan Nguyen, MD) and their mentors (Leslie Pennypacker, MD, Rebecca Beyth, MD and  Miho Baustista, MD) for having poster presentations accepted to the AGS annual meeting.

Following a highly competitive peer review process, the UF Institute on Aging has been awarded 14.7 million dollars under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to build a complex intended to facilitate participation of older adults in clinical trials and promote cooperation among existing research centers.

Dr. Susan Nayfield has joined our Department and Institute as Associate Professor and Division Chief of the Clinical Research Division, and Acting Chief of the Geriatric Medicine Division.   Dr. Nayfield comes with an extensive, multi-faceted education and training followed by 19 years of experience in key leadership roles at the National Institutes of Health – first at the National Cancer Institute and later at the National Institute on Aging, where she worked as Chief of the Geriatrics Branch, Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology Extramural Program.  Welcome, Dr. Nayfield!

Dr. Kenneth Heilman, a renowned behavioral neurologist whose research interests include attentional, emotional, and cognitive disorders was appointed as an Investigator at the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the VA.

The Department of Aging and Geriatrics is recruiting for a Clinical Assistant Professor, or Clinical Lecturer position. Congratulations to Dr. Miho Bautista for graduating with a Master’s degree of Medical Science.  The thesis title was: Role of Health Literacy in Total Knee Arthroplasty in Older Adults with Knee Osteoarthritis.

Congratulations to Dr. Emanuele Marzetti for his March 2008 appointment as a Lecturer with the Department of Aging, Biology of Aging Division.

Dr. Rebecca Beyth was one of the three UF Women Faculty selected to attend the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar in Scottsdale, AZ.

Dr. Rebecca Beyth was appointed to serve as a Member of the Clinical Aging Review Committee, National Institute on Aging, for a term beginning on July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2011.   Dr. Beyth was also an Invited Reviewer for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Special Emphasis Panel, ZHL1 CCT-S , “HV-08-003, Randomized Trail of Genotype-Guided Dosing of Warfarin Therapy”, Washington, DC.

Dr. Christiaan Leeuwenburgh was introduced on The Joan Hamburg radio show, WOR 710 New York, on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 to discuss hot topics in aging. Joan Hamburg has been covering the scene as a journalist and broadcaster for many years, and is known throughout the country for her award-winning consumer affairs reporting.The program was broadcast to New York City from The Villages, FL.

Congratulations to the following IOA/Department of Aging and Geriatrics staff and faculty: Laura Pons, Assistant to Dr. Pahor, on her promotion to Executive Secretary; Matteo Cesari, MD, PhD, researcher in the Division of Clinical Research, on his promotion to Research Assistant Professor, and Todd Manini, PhD, Pepper Scholar and researcher in the Division of Clinical Research, on his promotion to Assistant Professor.

The VA GRECC and the University of Florida Institute on Aging are hosting a preconference program entitled, “Interventions to Promote Independence: New Discoveries in Physical Activity Programs, Cognitive Training and Gene Therapy” to be held Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at the Hilton St. Petersburg in St. Petersburg, FL. This preconference of the International Conference on Aging, Disability, and Independence (ICADI) will bring together six nationally known researchers and clinicians from multiple disciplines to focus on interventions that can promote independence in aging.

Christian Leeuwenburgh, PhD, Professor and Chief of the Division of Biology of Aging, presented “Mitochondria and muscle” at the 4th Cachexia Conference which was held December 8, 2007 at the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfont in St. Petersburg, FL.

Rebecca Beyth, MD, MSc, presented “Alcohol Use Disorders in the Elderly” to the University of Florida Medicine Residents Noon Conference on 10/30/07. The Department of Aging & Geriatrics will be presenting at the conference on a regular basis and, as the schedules are finalized, they will be added to the monthly calendar of events.
